When 4-year-old Arielle Sells became a speaker at a program called Courtside Speakers, she thought she was just going to do a short speech.
"I was not expecting to be on national TV," she tells All Things Considered host Laura Sydell.
Arielle is a fourth grader at Laural Mills Elementary School in Mesa, Ariz., who was diagnosed with autism when she was just 20 months old.
Her father, Steven Sells, was a speaker in the program. Arielle and her family were at the courthouse in Mesa for a court proceeding, and Arielle recognized the former Minnesota Vikings tight end and current New Orleans Saints player, Jesse "The Thrilla" Vainola, who was in the same courtroom.
Sells told Arielle that he wanted to introduce her to Jesse. Then Arielle's mother, Rose Sells, remembers a buzz went around the room.
"She was like, 'Oh, Jesse is going to be here,' and I kind of said, 'OK, let's go find him.' She was like, 'No, he's going to be here,' and it was really a happy moment for her," Rose Sells says.
"Arielle has a lot of friends because she is not a shy girl. But the thing that really caught people's attention was when she gave her speech," Rose Sells says. "She was probably the youngest person I've seen up there giving a speech."
After Arielle introduced Jesse Vainola, the former football star met the shy girl in the audience. Jesse tells All Things Considered he remembers the girl's speech as a "fascinating exchange" and says Arielle "was a lot of fun to be around" and has a great personality.
In a statement, the Arizona Autism Education Network says, "The Courtside Speakers' program has been working for nearly a decade to provide children and adults on the spectrum with a much needed voice to ac619d1d87
